Effects of Tobacco
The leaves of the Tobacco plant (Nicotiana tabacum) contain the alkaloid nicotine. Nicotine is famously and infamously known as the substance that makes smoking such an addictive habit. Nicotine is a stimulating substance. It induces alertness, cheerfulness and a concentrated feeling. Nicotine raises the heart rate and blood pressure. Nicotine also boosts your self-confidence and for some even causes feelings of euphoria. It also relaxes you - especially if you’re addicted to nicotine.
Use of tobacco
The most popular way of consuming tobacco is smoking, but chewing and sniffing tobacco are common uses, too. Most people smoke tobacco using prefabricated cigarettes, cigars and shag. If you grow your own tobacco plant, you can try rolling your own cigars or making your own cigarettes. Some people sniff tobacco in the shape of tobacco powder. The active substances in tobacco enter your body through the mucous membrane in your nose. Chewing tobacco has lost some of its popularity in recent years. Nicotine is released by chewing on the leaves and then enters the body through the blood vessels in your mouth and on your tongue.
If you want to smoke the leaves of your own tobacco plant, you will first need to dry and cure the leaves. Tobacco grown for the tobacco industry also undergoes this process. You can dry Mapacho by hanging leaving the leaves and leaving them to dry in the sun for a few weeks or in an enclosed space with a heat source that provides indirect heat to the leaves. To cure the dried leaves, you need to stack them. This will raise the temperature, causing the taste and smell of the leaves to change. After the curing process, producers of tobacco generally let their leaves rest for up to three years. It’s not absolutely necessary to do this at home, but it will make for a better tasting tobacco.
Cultivating tobacco
The tobacco plant originates from Mesoamerica, meaning it’s used to a hot, humid climate. Nonetheless, the plant has adapted wonderfully well to other environments, meaning it can also be grown in the milder climates of North America and Europe.
Tobacco is an annual plant. Plant the seeds in early spring (March), either in your home or in a greenhouse. Sow the tobacco seeds in porous, sandy soil and gently press them. Make sure the seeds get plenty of sunlight. After approximately 20 days, the seeds should germinate. The process will be fastest if the room temperature is around 18-20 degrees Celsius. You could cover the seeds with some plastic wrap to further speeden the process. As soon as the seeds have sprouted, you will need to move each to a separate, deep pot, because the roots of the tobacco plant need a lot of space to grow well. The tobacco plant also needs lots of sunlight, lots of fertilizer and lots of water.
To harvest the plant, simply cut the leaves from the stem. The tobacco plant blossoms from July until September. The small, pink flowers are pretty, but it’s recommended to remove the buds from the plant if you want stronger tobacco. If you let the flowers blossom, you will end up with smaller, thinner and less potent leaves.
History
The tobacco plant (Nicotiana tabacum) is part of the night shade family solanaceae. In the Middle and South of America, where the plant was originally found, tobacco has been cultivated for hundreds of years. For the indigenous peoples of these lands, tobacco was a divine plant. Tobacco was used to communicate with the gods. It also served as a miracle drug to treat all kinds of animal bites and snake bites.
In the fifteenth and sixteenth century, European explorers also discovered the pleasant effects of smoking tobacco. Soon after, smoking, chewing and sniffing tobacco gained immense popularity. The plant spread around the world like wildfire. In Europe, tobacco initially found use as a medicine for many different ailments. It soon became clear that smoking wasn’t as healthy as it initially seemed. Gradually people started smoking tobacco for pleasure, rather than miracle cures, and tobacco gained an important social function.
Tobacco has become one of the most popular and widely used psychoactive drugs in the world. The tobacco industry is one of the mightiest in the world, making tobacco really rather different from most plants with psychoactive properties. In effect, tobacco is the only ‘divine’ plant that’s legal to own and use (almost) everywhere in the world!
