History
The name Muira Puama, sometimes spelled as Marapuama, means “potency wood”. It is a very popular aphrodisiac, originally growing in the Brazilian rainforests. The Ptychopetalum grows as shrubs or small trees, and its barks and roots are harvested for traditional, medical and herbal usage. It is mentioned as an effective aphrodisiac in the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia and the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia. In Brazil, men would rub the Muira Puama on their genitals to stimulate an erection, and to counter impotence. It is also drank as a tea, which has very stimulating effects. The skin and genitals become more sensitive, and therefore works very well as an aphrodisiac. Next to these bedroom effects, the Marapuama is used as a neural system tonic, against rheumatism, stress, fatigue and mild depressions.
