Hawaiian Copelandia Panaeolus Cyanescens grow kit cultivation instructions
Work cleanly!
Clean your work area and wash your hands. Use gloves and a face mask if you have one. Work with your arms straight so that the kit is an arm's length away from you. This will prevent you from breathing or coughing into the kit or grow bag.
Setting up your Hawaiian Copelandia grow kit:
- Remove the contents of the kit. The substrate container, the topsoil (casing layer) container, the growbag (moisture bag), the paperclip.
- Spread the black topsoil (casing layer) over the substrate, smoothing it evenly over the surface.
- Place the kit in the grow bag.
- Mist potable water over the top layer of soil until it is wet but not soaked.
- Add fresh air and close the bag with the paper clip.
- Every day mist the surface of the grow kit and add fresh air by squeezing the bag and opening it again to allow fresh air to enter.
- 5 - 17 days after starting your Copelandia growk kit,, pins (small mushrooms) will start to form.
- DO NOT SPRAY on the pins or the mushrooms directly, but take the mushroom grow kit out, add fresh air, lightly spray the bag, add the kit and close the bag again.
- 5-7 days after pinning most mushrooms will be fully grown and ready to pick.
- Prepare the kit for the next rinse by spraying the top layer with plenty of water. Spray until there is one or two inches of water at the bottom of the grow kit. You can pour the water out of the kit when the new flush starts to grow.
Set-Up
The setup or positioning of your Hawaiian Copelandia kit is very important.
- Your growing area should be clean and disinfected.
- Choose a spot off the ground, preferably between knee and eye level. Or on top of a cupboard.
- Do NOT grow in your bathroom, toilet or basement. These areas often contain other moulds or bacteria.
- Do NOT place the kit in a box, container or other enclosed environment. The grow kit needs fresh air and ventilation. Without regular fresh air the mycelium will perish.
- Do NOT place the kit in direct sunlight. A bright spot in the house is perfect.
Temperature
The fruiting temperature for Panaeolus Cyanescens mushrooms is around 24 degrees Celsius, more or less the same as you grow Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms. If you keep your grow kit at this temperature, the kit will thrive. We have found that if the kitting temperature is lower than 19 degrees the kit will not perform as well.
- Colonization temperature 26-29°C
- Fruiting temperature 23-26°C
Fresh Air Exchange (FAE)
The mycelium and mushrooms need fresh air to develop, so it is important to air the grow bag 2 times a day. You can add fresh air by doing the following
- Close your doors and windows to avoid draughts.
- Wash your hands or use gloves
- Open the grow bag, by removing the clip and unfolding the top.
- Now squeeze and open the bag to add fresh air.
- Do this 3-4 times and the kit will have enough fresh air for the rest of the day.
- Fold the top and close it with the paperclip.
- Ventilate the kit in the morning and at night.
Humidity
After adding fresh air it is time to increase the humidity in the grow bag. This can be done by misting the top soil of the kit and the inside of the grow bag. Make it moist not wet. After adding fresh air, it is time to increase the humidity in the grow bag. This can be done by moistening the top soil of the kit and the inside of the grow bag. Make it damp, not wet.
When the first small mushrooms start to form in the grow kit, remove the substrate kit from the humidifier bag and spray only into the bag! Hawaiian Copelandia mushrooms do not like to get wet and will stop growing. Never spray the mushrooms.
Harvesting
The perfect time to harvest your Hawaiian Copelandia kit is about 24-36 hours after the Panaeolus Cyanescens mushrooms have shed their spores. The caps will turn a little greyish white and you will also see some black spores on the caps. Time to pick your mushrooms!
Unlike the Psilocybe cubensis, the Panaeolus cyanescens does not have a veil under its' cap. The caps simply open and drop their spores.
How do you harvest the mushrooms from the Copelandia mushroom kit?
Knock the Panaeolus Cyanescens mushrooms gently over and snap them at the base. They will detach from the substrate and are ready to use.
Read more about how to store your mushrooms.
Spore prints of Panaeolus cyanescens Copelandia
Panaeolus cyanescens produces a black spore print, which is best obtained when the caps are opened. This allows you to store the genetics of the mushroom strain and study the spores under a microscope.
- Harvest a mushroom that has it cap open
- Cut the cap off the stem
- Place the cap with the gills downwards on alufoil or a microscope slide.
- Cover the cap and foil with a glass bowl or jar.
- Wait 1-2 days
- Remove the cap from the surface
- Your print is ready!
- Secure the print by folding the foil and store in a zip-lock bag.

History
- Not much is known about the history of Panaeolus cyanescens. There are no archaeological finds of the mushrooms. And it was often available alongside other more familiar mushrooms such as psilocybe cubensis and amanita muscaria, which were probably used instead.
- Panaeolus cyanescens was and still is used in Indonesia for rituals, celebrations and recreation. Indonesian batik artists used Pan Cyans for inspiration, which explains the colourful and trippy design of the art.
- The mushrooms were given to travellers and, as their popularity grew in the 1980s, sold to tourists in Bali, Java and Sumatra.
- In Samoa, the indigenous people called the mushrooms by various names, referring to the state of mind that the Pan Cyans give you or the way they are grown. For example, Taepovi means 'cow patty', Pulouaitu means 'spirit house' and Faleaitu means 'comedy'. Apparently, Samoan youth discovered the psychoactive qualities of the Panaeolus cyanescens mushroom in the 1970s.
- During the 1990's Panaeolus cyanescens appeared in the Netherlands, spread by home growers and shortly after in 'smartshops' under the name Hawaiian or Balinees.
- Funnily enough, even Panaeolus cyanescens is primarily from tropical climates, the specimen that was researched for it's psilocybin was collected from a garden in France.
- Other names for Panaeolus cyanescens include: Blue meanies, Pan cyan, Hawaiian blue meanies, blauender dungerling, falterdungerling (German), jambur/jamur (Indonesian), tenkech (Chol).
Taxonomic history
In 1871, Pan Cyans were named Agaricus cyanescens by Berkeley and Broome. Years later, it was named Copelandia papilionacea by Bresadola from the Philippines, and then Copelandia cyanescens by Singer in 1951. The species was named Panaeolus cyanescens by Saccardo in 1887, which is now its official name.

In total over a period of about 4 weeks, after which the grow kit stopped producing new pins, i had more or less harvested 100g of mushrooms. They were tall, but thin and had small caps at the beginng while at the end they got the same hight but thicker and bigger caps, but not yet as big as seen on the pictures.
I think this is due to temperature in the 1st two weeks we had about temperatures of 30 degrees celsius outside while inside where the mushrooms were it was about 27max and at night 24C the last two weeks the room temperature dropped to about 24/23. Next time i will by this kit in colder months and try again i think they will be bigger then.
Having said that the mushrooms were still veryy potent compared to the cubanis strain.
For sure 4+ times stronger and the trips were amazing.
So defintely a recomended product (Posted on 9/9/2023) - Waiting Review by Starting

The mycelium (the white cloudy stuff) looked very healthy after about a week but then suddenly became soaked from condensation, leading me to believe I had overwatered the bag. I sent a picture to customer support and they said the wetness is normal, but I ended up getting 5-6 very small mushrooms on the first grow - from the few spots that weren't moist - a bunch of puny, aborted shrooms, and no luck on a second grow. small yields but don't need to restart and you can pick them every few days, I used to eat them right away, 1-3 is good for microdosing they are neat and calm rather than any cubensis I've tried, it is worth your efforts why not?;-]...
and one more thing, the black soil should be loose like a crumbles, do not push it with your fingers (gloves) like the dough, it needs to be loose to create white thick mycelium....good luck! (Posted on 8/25/2022) - Dishappointed. Review by Emmanuele

It was an interesting growing process, as I picked them during different days instead of in flushes. The reason was that some were ready to pick while a lot others were growing up or babies.
I don't know if this was the right process, I was also a bit unsure about when to pick them, as they don't have an easy cue like the opening of the veil of the other mushrooms.
Also they seem to have a high amount of water, like 94-95%, which I don't know if it means something.
I haven't tried their potency at the moment.
And I wish there would be more clear instructions, specially on when to pick them.
I'm happy
