It's undeniable, there is an actual renaissance in psychedelic research and thought!

This article explores the many prestigious universities (Imperial College London,  John Hopkins University) that are presently running very interesting research programs to explore the possibility that psychedelic compounds might effectively treat afflictions including depression, post-traumatic disorder, addiction and anxiety.

In 2006, Roland Griffiths, a psychopharmacologist at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and a team of researchers published a groundbreaking article in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, “Psilocybin Can Occasion Mystical-Type Experiences Having Substantial and Sustained Personal Meaning and Spiritual Significance.” The paper concludes that, “When administered under supportive conditions, psilocybin occasioned experiences similar to spontaneously occurring mystical experiences.” Two-thirds of those involved in the sessions described them as being among the most meaningful experiences of their lives.

This is not new, a few decades ago their peers set out to do just that but where stopped by legislation and demonization of the mystical experience mushrooms can give you.  Timothy Leary is one of those researchers that was persecuted, Richard Nixon even called him ''the most dangerous man in North America''.

It goes on to explain that the effort by governments to put an end to research in that field is due to the sense of clarity and understanding that comes out of the primary mystical experience, it was threatening to them.  Can you think of another area of science regarded as dangerous and taboo that all research gets shut down for decades? It’s unprecedented in modern science.

.

If you are a smoker chances are that you have tried to quit at least once in your life.  Smokers know it can be a very challenging experience to try to quit.

This article explores a study that has been carried by Johns Hopkins University, a study on the effects of using psylocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, to help smokers to quit.  It appears the results where very impressive!

The study tha was published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology showed a smoking abstinence rate of 80 percent after six months.  Compare that to the 35 percent rate for a drug called varenicline, which is considered as one for the mos effective addiction treatment options for smokers...

What could possibly be the the reason behind this success?  According to Dr. Matthew Johnson: "When administered after careful preparation and in a therapeutic context, psilocybin can lead to deep reflection about one's life and spark motivation to change."

Splendid Animation Depicting the Mystical States of Altered Consciousness

.

What is higher consciousness?  How can we reach it?  Is attained through religious practice?

It seems that higher consciousness has nothing inherently to do with spirituality and can be defined in rational and secular terms.  This is important because higher consciousness can really help us become better persons, to move beyond our self interests and to explain others actions by their distress rather in terms of simply how it affects us.  This ultimately helps us to lead happier lives.
