Philosophy and Values

.

..

Dr. Maté's philosophy centers around the power of compassion, connection, and the intricate relationship between the mind and the body. He believes that many mental and physical health issues stem from unaddressed emotional pain and early-life experiences.

..

Drawing upon extensive research, Dr. Maté asserts that addiction is not solely a problem of the individual but also a reflection of society's broader issues. He emphasizes that addiction is not about the substances themselves but rather an individual's attempt to escape emotional suffering. This compassionate approach allows him to see addiction as a response to pain and a coping mechanism rather than a personal failing.

..

Dr. Maté also highlights the significance of the mind-body connection. He believes that emotional stress and trauma can manifest in physical ailments, including autoimmune disorders, chronic pain, and mental health conditions. Through his work, Dr. Maté aims to bridge the gap between the physical and psychological realms, recognizing the impact of emotional well-being on overall health.

“So much of what we call abnormality in this culture is actually normal responses to an abnormal culture. The abnormality does not reside in the pathology of individuals, but in the very culture that drives people into suffering and dysfunction.”

Maté’s public work also recognizes that psychedelics, such as psilocybin and MDMA, have shown promise in treating conditions like depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He believes that these substances have the potential to facilitate profound healing experiences by allowing individuals to access suppressed emotions, gain insights, and connect with their inner selves.
